the lake

the lake did me in again. we went to austin this weekend for my wife's sister's birthday and i took off to hang out with my dad for his birthday. but before i did that, i made another valuable contribution to a texas water body.

the first contribution happened in july of 2008. i had just gotten married in april and was getting used to my wedding ring. it was kind of loose and i didn't think that was normal. i told my wife about it and she said, yeah, it should be a little loose. i said okay. so we're out on her brother's boat in lake scummerville (sommerville) in brenham. we jump off for a bit and start throwing around the football. i dive for a throw to my right and when i come up, i feel around my fingers and notice that my wedding ring is gone. totally gone. flew off at some point when i dove for the ball. we (my wife, me and two friends) spent the next two and a half hours looking for that ring. this water was kind of nasty too and i'm not sure what exactly i was touching down on the bottom. that was my first contribution.

my second contribution came this past weekend. we get to her sister's kind of late friday night, like around 9pm. we start hanging out and having a good time. we leave and head out to this awesome house on the lake, that's where we're staying the night. so this place was amazing. hot tubs upstairs, all kinds of flat screens and stuff. we sleep, get up and we're (just five of us who stayed there) are going to take the boat out on the lake before everybody from the party gets there. and it was not easy getting the boat in. the water on lake travis was down probably about fifteen feet. we had to fanagle that thing in. but eventually, it got in. we drove around, found a good place to wakeboard and a terrific time. the last person to wakeboard was my wife's brother. once he gets done, my wife asks for my help pulling in the wakeboard. so i'm happy to help. but while i'm bending over to help pickup the wakeboard, my left hand comes up too high and i knock my glasses in the river. gone. sunk like a stone. i stood there, dazed for a second, not believing i had done it again and this time, now i was literally disabled because of it. but, i laughed it off. that's something you can do when you lose your wedding ring. but i had no way of getting to my dad's now for his birthday.

anyway, long story short, we went to walmart and i got an eye-exam and a trial pair of contacts and able to see again. the prospect of not being able to see for two days was really horrible. thank goodness for walmart. so between the ring and glasses, i've not contributed about $1,000 to various water bodies in texas. if you find either one, please return them to me.
